Video: Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt Chats With The New Gay

Feb.12, 2010 at 1:10 pm, under News

There may not be ANYTHING that comes to recent memory that made me more uncomfortable than watching this series of interviews conducted by The New Gay with Magnetic Fields’ frontman Stephin Merritt. Kid is swarming all over, but then again, I’m sure I’d be as well.

Collected in three series below, Stephin Merritt touches on a plethora of subjects ranging from contemporary music that Merritt considers himself a fan of, to coming out as a homosexual, all the way to the concept of the user-friendly wikipedia and how their entries are founded on “rumors”.

Running around 25 minutes, the interview also sees Merritt giving advice to homosexual peers in the music industry: “Don’t come out. I think the outing movement and the general propaganda that everyone ought to come out, I think that damaged a lot of people actually. I think it’s clear from the careers of gay performers that the way to be successful is to come out later, not beforehand.”

There also is a new documentary about Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields entitled: Strange Powers debuting on February 28 at the San Francisco Film Society. Check out the trailer here.

Fresh Track: Adam Green – “Castles and Tassels”

DOWNLOAD MP3: Adam Green – “Castles And Tassels”

Former Moldy Peaches frontman Adam Green has a new album titled: Minor Love due out on February 16 via Fat Possum. The first track to be released off the album is “Castles” and Tassels,” an acoustic, consciously quirky song, that finds Green declaring: “Castles and tassels and flatulent assholes, I love you” in a very Stephin Merritt-y kinda way. Yeah, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Green has a mondo European tour plan through March that can be seen here on his Myspace, but no word yet on any U.S. Dates.
